Hi,
Thanks for the response. You will probably think this funny, but I am in Boston.
I joined Atlanta, because your group seemed to post responses quickly and were very helpful.
I took some advice already from your group and asked for "Front Page" to be added to my list of modules.
The process here is a bit confusing. I got my permissions to host on an academic/research site, so they set up the Drupal account, but they don't offer any support.
I need to work on it on my own and need something that accepts a banner, that is why I asked for front page, but I am also having formatting issues with the basic text and the menu bar.
Any suggestions for help?
theme and module
If you need a banner, you have two choices. If your group has some kind of budget, you can hire a consultant who will design a custom site that includes it.
Several of our members can do that. We had a great demo on a custom site at our last workshop (see report on this site).
If the budget is restricted, you need to find a theme that includes a banner. If you use Drupal 5, it will be easier than with D6.
Roopletheme (http://www.roopletheme.com) has several themes that include a banner. And they also have a forum where they usually are very helpful.
For formatting, you can use html in the body of your content creation.
But there are also modules that facilitate formatting and editing, "TinyMce" and "FCKeditor".
FCK is lighter than TinyMce ans doesn't slow down the site.
Another module that will help with organizing and editing is CCK (the "Content Construction Kit" module).
You need the Views module before you install it. The documentation on CCK on Drupal.org is fairly decent.
budget
Yes, we have a budget, but it is not open-ended. I would have to get some idea of the parameters of having someone design the site.
What we need is fairly simple. We have a custom banner for the group that I would like to use, then I need navigation keys for the different pages. Basically that's it.
It needs to be simple so that other users can edit content fairly easily. That is why we went from a site that only a web developer could edit to using Drupal in the first place. I like the CMS format for editting but have not used Drupal before but used a software that made editting easy.
If you have someone in mind, could you pass on my info.
Thanks.
passing on info
I'll pass it on to several Drupal developers from our group.
I need help
I am using Drupal to create a new website for a consortium of researchers affiliated with major academic instituitions.
I thought a CMS would be great for anyone else trying to put up pages and was given a link and setup by a developer, but our institution won't support it.
Is there some tutorial that I could use, or is there anyone in the group that could give me some advice. I have created some pages, stories etc, my problem is mostly formatting, menu issues.
If there is a fee, we could probably arrange that.
Thanks for any help you can give.

How urgent?
We have Drupal workshops in Atlanta every month (as shown in the Meetup section of the site), where we form workgroups and these types of questions can be answered.
The meetings are at Manuel's Tavern and the next meeting is July 8th.
